For a relational design.
carrérotondes is a cultural institution focussing mainly on a young public. The institution's goal is to promote and facilitate the realization of various programmes: life performance, workshop studios, theatre, exhibition facilities, bar and club. This institution is located in a former circular railroad hangar (rotunda) and in an old square factory building (carré).
For the visual identity, "a l part" took inspiration from the ancient Chinese game called Tangram : a "puzzle" based on a circular shape (rotondes = rotunda) fitted into a square (carré) and subdivided into 7 geometric shapes.
The combination of the 14 Tangram shapes generate new ones, and their arrangement on all types of communication supports allows for countless variations. The geometric shapes can exist in isolation, be assembled into abstract figures or be metamorphosed into typographical signs. They highlight the logo, may change colours, serve as masks or as frames for pictures. They can also be cut up, manipulated or photographed and exist in 2 or 3 dimensions...
The logo is a variable logo and combines the type 071 MKSD (by Masayuki Sato) with a group of variable Tangram shapes. Our research has resulted in a supple and flexible graphic chart that i
s managed by the client himself. It is a chart that is not defined in a restrictive way as a set of rules and prohibitions but in a permissive way, like a game. The Tangram thus becomes the chart, a metaphor and a mascot for carré rotondes.
The graphic shapes also offer an interactive aspect to the public : hand-outs, Internet site and furniture. The ludic applications of visual identity thus respond to the multidisciplinary, relational and participative dimensions of the client's cultural strategy.
